Read Ender's Game, Chapters 9 and 10, and respond to these questions:
Chapter 9
“The mind game is a relationship between the child and the computer. Together they create stories. The stories are true, in the sense that they reflect the reality of the child's life. That's all I know” (Card, 121)
1) What game is this quote referring to? What do you think of this kind of game? Would you want to play?
2) While Ender learns the ropes of Battle school, Peter and Valentine Wiggen have begun a game of their own. What is the nature of this game? What is the goal? The rules? Who designed this game, and who is playing? What are the game pieces?
Chapter 10
1) In this chapter, what sort of games does Ender use to teach? What is his role in these games?
2)Would you want Ender for a teacher? Why or why not?
3)If you were a teacher, would you want to be like Ender? Why or why not? Would you use his games? What kind of games would you use, in his position?

CHAPTER 9
ReplyDeleteThey are reffering to the computer game that ender plays when he doesn’t feel like doing any training. I think a game basied on my personality would be pritty interesting. However I woulnd’t really want to play because I’m a little worred what my relaity would show.
The nature of this game to debate eachother and gain politaical power while having the masses follow them like sheep. The goal would obiously be world domination. No politic games are to boring.
Chapter 10
He first starts usinging teaching metheds that were used on him as soon as he got there such as singling out one indavial. Later he makes them work together and uses positive methods. Ender role in these games would have to be leader.
I think I would rather have ender as an opponet, rather then a teacher mostly because I learn more from my opponet then I do a teacher.

ReplyDelete1) He is referring to the computer game that Ender plays during his free time. I think these kinds of games are manipulative and frighting, but can serve a purpose. I would not want to play this game, because I feel that it would be invasive and startling.
2)Val and Peter are playing a stragey game on the nets, but it is not a game to them. They want to influence the world in a way that resumes peace. The rules are that neither of them can use their alternative net persona's without consent and tailoring from the other. The persona must stick to it's political and ethical views, no matter what. Also the personas will not engage in a forum unless they are invited. Peter designed the game and both he and Val are playing it. The personas they created are the pieces to which they make their "move" along the nets which serve as the "board".

1)Ender uses mind games like the ones that were implemented on him, like alienating Bean.
2)I would not want Ender as a teacher, he excepts nothing other than perfection, and works his students to the breaking point.
3)If I was a teacher I would probably use a softer touch with my students, however it is obvious that in Ender's situation he had no choice but to be tough and cruel in order to prepare his men.

ReplyDelete1) The quote is referring to the Free Play game that Ender was playing. I’m not entirely sure exactly what I think about it, it’s an intriguing idea (A game harnessing the psychology and memories of the player to create the story), but one that I would be a bit resistant to playing. I don’t think I want my games turning into some type of Freudian psychoanalytic nightmare.
2) The nature of Peter and Valentines game is quite literally galactic domination. That’s the stated goal. On a secondary level, there is another conflict going on with the power balance between the two of them. The games designers are in part the people who created the “nets”, and Peter and Valentine themselves. The rules of the game involve identity and hierarchy – the two of them cannot reveal themselves (and are using their fathers account), must build their level of prestige to a point where they can be involved in more international dialogues. I assume the game pieces are all people.
Chapter 10:
1) Ender uses unfair games to teach his soldiers, much like the commanders before him did. Many of them are unsure how to react to his instructions, and are put off guard by his seemingly unpredictable demands. They catch on quickly, where it then becomes a matter of physical and mental competency. His role is that of a teacher and dictator (commander). Also, in the same vein as those before him, he makes many of the students despise Bean, the smallest and most talented soldier in his group.
2) It depends on the subject. If I were in the army, I would want him as a teacher. He makes his soldiers instantly independent, using the same isolationist techniques that were used on him. He teaches them, well, like one would teach soldiers. But he’s also in a game where the stakes involve the fate of mankind, and as a teacher for something like football or rowing, his methods would not be as appropriate because they place a lower emphasis on team cohesion and coordination.
3) No, I wouldn’t, because he makes many of his students despise him, and each other. This is appropriate for one of his goals, but it doesn’t work well in many other scenarios. I am a teacher, and I don’t use methods that inspire hatred and jealousy amongst my students. In his position, I would place a greater focus on team behavior, and emphasize that it’s equally important for his soldiers to respect and support each other.

ReplyDelete1. The quote is referring to the free play game Ender has been playing and slowing making his way further through. I think is kind of game is interesting to watch other people play. It seems to manifest the players mental state by presenting them with a problem that represents what the player may be going through, such as the wolves on the playground earlier and seeing himself as Peter in the mirror later on, and measures how they react to it. Personally I don’t think I would want to play because I would rather not know how I would respond to most of the types of problems presented.
2. The nature of the game is one of deception and manipulation, the goal is to one day rule the world, as Peter says. The rules of the game are that Peter and Valentine have to remain undetected and not let themselves be found out. Designers of the game would be the people who reply to all of their threads and the game pieces are most likely media on the net.
Ch 10
1. Ender uses game where he demands something from his army that is almost impossible to achieve. He does this to keep his soldiers on their toes and instill more discipline in his army which mostly consists of freshly promoted launchies. Ender’s role is to be similar to the adults. The one everyone collectively hates so that they learn to work better together.
2. Personally I think I would want Ender as a teacher. I probably would realize it at the time but im sure that his teaching and instructing methods would cause me to despise him but I would probably turn out the better due it.
3. If I were in Ender’s position and I had to shape soldiers to save the world, then yes, I would want to be like him. While the method is not very effective at making friends it is very effective at getting a group to properly work together. I would use games similar to his in that I would present virtually impossible goals to my subordinates. That way it forces them to work together to reach whatever the goal is and is that much more rewarding when they do reach it.

ReplyDelete1) The so called fantasy game that Ender plays at his desk. I'd play a game that uses my mind as content, I'm too curious not to.
2) Peter designed the game, it's political in nature, however, also a test to see what two kids are capable of. Perhaps Peter has dark ambitions, using people as pieces, the "nets" as a board.
Ch 10
1) Typical command head games, similar to what was used on him. He's in command, he sets the rules, he's the GM.
2) Sure. Why not be taught by the best, he's proven his worth as an instructor, as well as a soldier.
3) A teacher in what situation? If your in the military there isn't much room for being soft. I can agree with the majority of his command. As for my self I would do whatever it takes to create a solid team, military or not, people need to know how to work with each other. Enforce that which is necessary, reward that which is deserving.

1) The desk game that Ender has been advancing through. I think the concept is interesting and I'd play it.
2) The nature of Peter and Valentine's game is manipulative. The goal is to guide the populous' thoughts in regards to politics towards what the two (Peter, really) want/desire it to be. The rules are to stay within character. Peter designed the game with the two alter-egos being the game pieces.

1) Ender uses intense mind games to teach. These are much like the ones he was taught with, only his role now is to command.
2)Sure. Ender has a lot going on in that head.
3)Yes. Ender is quite thorough. I would use his games.

ReplyDelete1. I think it’s saying that the inside the child’s mind, the game is real to them. In real life people who get really frustrated with games tend to react as if the game is real. They will throw the control, walk away to walk off the anger and many other things. Sometimes games can emotional affect you as well. When I was younger there would be times where I would cry because one of the characters would in the game dies. Even though I know the game is not real, it felt real enough to me to make me cry. Would I want to play a game that used people in my real life? Not really especially if I have to kill them off within the game. The only exception if it’s a light hearted game that’s suppose to be funny, then I can play a game with images of my family and friends.
2. Valentine and Peter are playing a strategy game but they don‘t really consider it a game. They want to influence the world to think in their point of view so they can control it. Peter designed the game based on political views. While both Valentine and Peter play the game she discovers she is almost as manipulative as Peter, just to a lesser extent.
Chapter 10
1. He uses the mind games to train his students so they can be better prepared for the battle games.
2. No I wouldn’t want Ender as a teacher because he comes across as harsh with his strict rules but at the same time it is making his student win battles. I’m sort of indifference because I like to keep a balance of work and play. Ender really doesn’t have that option so it’s work all the time, which takes the fun out of the game.
3. I would like to have Ender’s talent but certainly not his situation. If I was a teacher I would be a strict like Ender is but at the sometime I think it’s important to let your student have a say in their learning and let them have a bit of fun. I definitely wouldn’t want to work my students too hard to the point it will lead to resentment. I really don’t know what games I would use to prepare for battle like Ender does but I would try to do my best so my army could win all the battle. I guess I would try to be less cruel than Ender is even though we know he doesn’t really mean to be cruel
